We learn to be humans though our families. Our family teaches us values and priorities. They teach us our roles: what it means to be a child, adolescent, adult, spouse, and parent. Throughout our life, our psyche has imprinted our family history. There are times in our lives when we chose to challenge how we are and how we want to live our lives. During these moments, I want to offer guidance, education, and support as you embark on your journey of transformation.
I graduated from University of Dallas in with a Bachelor in Psychology and West Georgia College with a Masters in Psychology. I attended humanistic oriented Psychology Program, which shaped how I view myself as a counselor. Studies and training included Play Therapy, Family Studies, Sandplay, and Art Therapy.
My orientation is Jungian. I use eclectic techniques ranging from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Play Therapy to meet the needs of patients. I believe I am here to serve you meet your therapeutic goals.
My experience has included working with children, adolescents, and adults. Counseling issues have ranged from sexual abuse, neglect, depression, parenting, trauma, grief, loss, ADHD, ADD, divorce, anxiety, oppositional defiance, dual diagnosis, Mood Disorder, and relationship issues. Agencies I have worked with include the Department of Family Services, Juvenile Justice Systems, police, courts, and schools.
Helen Richards, M.S., LPC
Our life’s journey is like hiking a mountain. At times the path is easy to follow, smooth, well-marked. The slope is easy and comfortable. It takes almost no effort to move along. Then, we go round a bend, and the path disappears, or it suddenly descends a steep incline, or we are faced with a sheer cliff. During times like these, we need an experienced guide to help us find the path again. The preferred guide is one who points out the possible routes we could follow and provides clear, honest advice about the road ahead. If you are seeking such a guide, I would be honored to walk with you on your path.
I have extensive experience working on a wide variety of life’s challenges including personal development, parenting, dealing with troubled teens and preteens, coping with physical and mental illnesses, trauma, grief and loss issues. My practice encompasses all age groups, as I have years of experience working with teens and adults of all ages.
I offer a free fifteen minute consultation. If I am not the right therapist to help you find your way again, I will help you find one who is. If you decide to include me in your journey, I offer convenient hours to fit your schedule.
The counseling relationship is confidential. It is collaboration between counselor and client which attempts to achieve the client’s goals in a safe environment without shame or condemnation, regardless of the subjects presented.
As a therapist, I recognize and respect that entering therapy is not an easy step to take. I recognize and respect that the process can involve significant emotional pain as the client works through his/her difficulties. Because of this understanding, I commit to providing assistance and therapeutic support through the process of finding solutions and achieving the client’s goals. At all times, I will show respect to the client, while giving honest and open feedback. I primarily employ cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused therapy.
